quite creepy and scary March 8, 2010 Mrs. G. A. Sherwin (Kent, UK) I would really like to give this 3 and a half stars because its rather better than many critics said. Its a bit scary and atmospheric and not boring or stupid like many so-called horror movies. Quite a lot of blood and gore, but with a really good story attached. I liked it anyhow and found it really nice and creepy.
Not As Good As I Thought March 2, 2010 Suki (Wales) Though this was visually good in Blue Ray the actual movie is dissappointing. The storyline featured too much on sex scenes instead of following his train of thought, scheming, plotting etc. Not worth the money
dorian gray March 1, 2010 A. Willis (uk) not up to much it was very boring not like i expected it would be.would not recommend this film to some one i didn't like.
A cast-iron stinker - don't bother. February 28, 2010 D. McDaid (London, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can't believe this thing is averaging three and a half stars. A more artless, dreary, empty-headed adaptation it's hard to imagine. All the subtlety and wit of the original (and the superior 1945 adaptation) are stripped away to give us a hollow, charmless concoction populated by repugnant ciphers. Firth does reasonable work with an underwritten role - everyone else is there just to look pretty. Which brings me to the look of the film - a surfeit of CGI gives the movie an arid, plasticky atmosphere, like a cutscene from the most boring video game in the world. I'm slightly worried that watching this film has made me more stupid. Avoid.
AVOID February 28, 2010 MissMcC (Scotland) Please avoid this film at all costs. I am such a fan of 19th century literature, but I am also a huge movie fan too. I'm not the type of person who would say, don't watch the film because it's nothing like the book. I love the book, I love the George Sanders version of the film. I hate this film because it is a bad film. Othello, an earlier Parker film is excellent: subtle, lyrical, moving, beautifully acted. It surprises me that he made this. Bad films come along all the time, but it's so disappointing when one uses such rich source material - and manages to flatten it entirely. This is tedious, poorly acted and it all seems to take place in one night. Can't remember the last time I was so disappointed with a film. Please don't let Mr Parker near a camera again. He's clearly forgotten what to do with it.
