Amazon.co.uk Review 500 Days of Summer is like the American Apparel of movies, in that tries really hard to be hip--so hard it sometimes evokes an involuntary cringe. The perfect soundtrack (indie-pop infused with cleverly ironic 80’s hits), the smart cinematography, the occasionally broken fourth wall⦠It’s a natural progression from mid-00’s “youth-culture” flicks like Garden State and it does a good job rounding out the decade. Everything in this dramedy resembles a music video and the characters are twentysomethings once again not living up to their full potential. 500 Days of Summer is touted as being really unique and original--it’s not. But that’s not to say that it’s not worth watching; it is, and mostly because of the leads. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel play a couple whose relationship story is told through a series of out-of-order flashbacks. The non-linear storytelling means we hop moment to moment from sweet, romantic and fun to crushingly desperate and sad, because the ultimate point here is that even when we believe we may have found The One, said soulmate might not feel the same way. Gordon-Levitt is an exciting actor to watch and after a succession of very serious, very troubled roles, it’s a pleasure to see him here as a mostly well-adjusted young guy whose biggest problem is that he loves someone who doesn’t love him back. He’s the hero, and as such, Deschanel’s Summer Finn becomes the bad guy a little bit. But Deschanel plays it all big-eyed, conflicted and real and so you can’t help but forgive her. The much-lauded musical scene is tremendously joyful; if it doesn’t put a smile on your face, nothing will. 500 Days of Summer isn’t groundbreaking, but it's an entertaining movie about hip, beautiful people whose lives you can only enjoy for about two hours before getting back to your own.--Kira Canny, Amazon.com Stills from (500) Days of Summer (Click for larger image)

Finally, a chick flick for guys (reviewed from a guy's POV) August 23, 2010 Marco M (London, UK) Any guy who has had his heart crushed and destroyed will enjoy this movie. The structure of the film is very clever; the script is moving and intelligent; and the acting is incredible. The looks that sweep across Joseph Gordon-Levitt's face as he gazes at Summer ... wow! He really is in love with this girl. And the pain he feels ... you feel it too. All told from the guy's point of view.
I was choked up several times during the film by this amazing young man's acting and by the story that unfolded through its flash-forwards and flash-backs. The character of Summer is a vile piece of work, and there are many guys (like me) who has had his heart broken in the past by such a creature. You get the impression the film's writer has also gone through a relationship like this, making the film somewhat autobiographical. The character of Tom is so sensitive and sweet that he is destined to have his heart broken. Both characters are very close to real people everyone would know.
So when your girlfriend suggests you both watch this film, you may get more enjoyment from it than she does.
The feel-good film of 2009. August 10, 2010 I. Sidhu (London, UK)
This film was excellent. The cast puts on a pure heartfelt down-to-earth expression about the modernisms of relationships and how it is biased from the two people in one. We have the great and charismatic Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays 'Tom' (3rd Rock from the Sun, Brick, INCEPTION) who wholly represents the hopefully romantic and perhaps foolish romantic who wants that one great person in his life. He has a lovable geeky mannerism with no time for circumlocution, no time for one-night-stands or other quick endeavours. He rages through all the typical energies of love, angst, hope, determination. His yin to his coherent yang is Zoe Deschanel's character 'Summer' who has an aura of melancholy and nostalgia of previous non-standing relationship surrounding her, whilst JGL's character tries affectionately to break her hard-shell prejudices of there being "no such thing as love".
There is a level of emotional climax found throughout, but it is up to the audience to find it. It has a the feeling of a warm afternoon summer breeze which starts to fade away into the autumnal currents. Then rise back to warmer weathers only to be pushed back into cold winter gusts.
All throughout you want Summer (Z. Deschanel) to *see* love in Tom (J. G-L), but the ending, like most Hollywood films end on, is bitter-sweet. It gives a lasting impression of hope, like a gasp of cheer. With a send off like a pat on the back, feeling fresh. As a film you try to expect where the plot will go and if she will see Tom for what he genuinely is, a guy very much in love with every bit of Summer. You walk out with a glassful of hope in one hand and joy in the other.
The most feel-good film of 2009 I reckon. Effortless to enjoy, like a wisp of sugar and smooth like Nutella. 8.5/10.
Little bit slow but good July 8, 2010 F. Connolly (Scotland) This felt like a quirky French film to me, which I love. It was a little slow in places but overall enjoyable. Awesome soundtrack.
I like the way it was filmed, going back and forth, it made it more interesting. I'd recommend it to those who enjoy quirky films and who are looking for some entertainment. It's quite funny in places and worth a watch.
It's a feel good movie despite the story line.
Wise, funny and enchanting romantic comedy for grown-ups July 4, 2010 William Cohen (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this film. About 30 minutes after I had finished watching it, I realised just why. The whole thing ends up with a man and a woman having a heavy conversation on a bench in a park. That's happened to me three times, so the bitter sweet nature of this film was a real tonic. It manages to be realistic, and at the same time heartwarming.
I love the sophisticated wit, the super soundtrack and the sublime, vulnerable beauty of the leading lady. It occasionally uses a few hackneyed devices like the co-worker and the very young sister, but overall it surprised me with its depth and subversive take on the rom com genre.
A Love Story, Without A Love Story June 23, 2010 Sweet Ice 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this movie. If your hoping to walk away with a great happy ending, well, they let you know at the start that it won't happen. But the point of the movie is that romance is real and true, but it just may not be true with him/her. Just because it did not work out with them, it does not mean that it never will.
A good break from the normal movies that follow the same pattern everytime.
