Amazon.co.uk Review Rightly attracting major awards attention, The Hurt Locker is a supreme, tense and gripping piece of drama. And it grabs your attention from the stunning opening scene, which perfectly gets across the dangers faced by the specialist bomb disposal squad that we spend the rest of the film following. Chief among them is Jeremy Renner’s Sergeant William James, who is the focal point for much of The Hurt Locker. The film spends some time digging into his head and why he does what he does, and his approach doesn’t always leave him eye-to-eye with the rest of his squad. Renner, in surely a star-making performance, delivers a rounded, three-dimensional portrayal of a man you could easily write off as a maverick, and the film is significantly enriched as a result. But then with director Kathryn Bigelow behind the camera delivering her best film to date, The Hurt Locker excels still further. Her gritty, haunting visuals look superb in high definition too, evoking the down-to-earth shooting style Bigelow employs, and making the most of the assorted set-pieces she puts on film. It’s the sound that really gets you too, cleverly eating up the full breadth of a good surround-sound set-up, and carefully teasing you more and more into the film. Not that you’re likely to need much persuading. The Hurt Locker is a terrific war movie, and a very human one. It’s also packaged on a quality Blu-ray that matches up strong presentation with interesting extra feature. It comes very highly recommended. --Jon Foster

Not just another war film March 10, 2010 Bertrand Russell (Europe) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is much more than a simple war story about a bomb disposal unit in Iraq. It goes to our deepest fear;death and giving our lives a real meaning. Here we have a man who faces death on a level unknown to most of us. All soldiers who go into combat face death but men who deactivate bombs face death on another plane, and on an almost daily basis as we see in The Hurt Locker. They face death; to save what? It would be facile to say to save themselves and their buddies; not the case. In The Hurt Locker, the "hero" Jenner, saves people who are possibly his enemies. The scene where he tries to save an Iraqui wired with more than just one bomb(against his will) brings that out very clearly. Is he mad or is he a man on a mission? Whatever he may be, he shows us that it is better to be true to yourself than to live a life of utter meaningless(Observe the supermarket scene)He certainly does more good trying to save lives than walking around a supermarket filling up his trolley.
What more can be said? March 10, 2010 A. Hickman (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It was a good film, but perhaps not a great one. The idea of all these demolitions experts cowboying around Iraq is really pretty far-fetched. And the star turns--Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, etc.--smack of stunt casting. The performances by the principals, however, especially Anthony Mackie, are riveting. One quibble: Bigelow is the first woman director ever to win an Oscar for a feature film, but where are the women in the movie? Blink and you might miss Evangeline Lilly--another bit of stunt casting--who appears in what might be a flashback or a flashforward. I'm not sure which. Were any of the other ten nominees better films? Probably not--my personal favorite from last year, "Bright Star," by another woman director, Jane Campion, wasn't even nominated.
Overhyped, worth a rental March 10, 2010 Split-Pea Soup (Baden) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This film brings a lot to the table, the acting is superb, the story is promising, the music is excellent, the soundtrack and video all good, but for me it lacked the most important thing in a film, entertainment.
I saw this film twice in the last week. The first time I turned it off half way through. I gave it another go though, because I wanted to see what all the hype was about, and I ended up just fast forwarding to the few and far between action scenes. It is, in a word, boring.
I just couldn't get into the film. Not to say that you won't, but it just didn't keep my interest at all, and failed to entertain. The story of the guys diffusing road-side bombs promises to deliver with action, suspense and a thrilling ride, but the film just fell short in that department. Sure, there are suspenseful parts, but I just couldn't buy into them. The acting is superb though, you can't fault the practically no-name guys who all brought their A-game to this table.
That being said:
The video:
the 1080P delivers a very clean video, but there is some intended grain which lends credence and atmosphere to the locale. It is a very good transfer, and worthy of blu-ray. If you can live with the grain, and you should, because it really adds atmosphere to the film, you will find thie video very pleasing. The special effects look awesome in full HD. Four and a half stars for video. Not quite reference material in my opinion, but you won't complain about it either.
The sound:
the DTS-HD MA track delivers here big time. Five stars. The rock track pounds your speakers and gives all channels a thorough thrashing. As a rocker, I have to say, thumbs up! The music is just one aspect of sound however, but this film delivers on the dialogue as well. It comes across crystal clear, and unmuffled, even in loud scenes, the dialogue is not drowned out, and is clearly heard. As great as the music and dialogue is, the sound effects here slam the listener with awesome clarity, and the BASS here is just mind-blowing. The explosion scenes will rock your listening area and have your sub screaming for mercy. In a word, shakin!
Summary:
Reviews are always subjective, some loved this film, others hated it. I just found it boring. Sure it won Oscars a plenty, but to me that says more about the quality of films released in 2009 than it does about this film in particular. This film cleaned house at the Oscars in a year where the competition was weak. Take from that what you will.
My recommendation: Rent it.
Winner Of 6 Oscars incl. BEST PICTURE! March 10, 2010 D. Hutton (sydney, N.S.W. Australia) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Terrific and compelling film and I'd advise readers to look at the older reviews here. The site will inevitablely be invaded by crazed Avatar fanbois spitting chips and trashing the film-even though they probably have never seen it or at least pretend they have.
This won the Oscar??? what a waste of time. March 9, 2010 D. Holmes (England, UK) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I watched this film with fairly high expectations and was totally let down.
the story plays out like a TV movie, the acting really isn't much better. Nothing seems to happen in the film, just as we get a taste of some action and drama it ends as quickly as it started.
i really can't see why this won so many oscars let alone the fact it won best picture.
if i was to sum it up... boring, slow and totally forgettable.
Avoid.
