Amazon.co.uk Review
J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature film was billed as "not your father's Star Trek," but your father will probably love it anyway. And what's not to love? It has enough action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for any moviegoer, and Trekkers will enjoy plenty of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited to portray the characters we know they'll become later. Both a prequel and a reboot, Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine of The Princess Diaries 2), a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto of Heroes), but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet, including its new ship, the Enterprise, has to answer an emergency call from Vulcan. What follows is a stirring tale of genocide and revenge launched by a Romulan (Eric Bana) with a particular interest in Spock, and we get to see the familiar crew come together, including McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg).
The action and visuals make for a spectacular big-screen movie, though the plot by Abrams and his writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who worked together on Transformers and with Abrams on Alias and Mission Impossible III), and his producers (fellow Losties Damon Lindeloff and Bryan Burk) can be a bit of a mind-bender (no surprise there for Lost fans). Hardcore fans with a bone to pick may find faults, but resistance is futile when you can watch Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario or hear McCoy bark, "Damnit, man, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" An appearance by Leonard Nimoy and hearing the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry as the voice of the computer simply sweeten the pot. Now comes the hard part: waiting for some sequels to this terrific prequel. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Great film.   July 27, 2010

You can forget about the past Star Trek films this one is a new beginning.
Very enjoyable by far.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek   July 19, 2010

This film depicts how the original star trek team got together, using actors and actresses who really looked like the younger versions of the James T Kirk / Spock brigade. The story is exciting and the special effects are great. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Star Trek/science fiction in general or someone who likes action films as it seems to cover this as well. It is worth getting the blu-ray version as it just adds to the depth of detail captured in the film and surround sound will make for awesome viewing. In my opinion, one of the best films of 2009.

Simon Pegg can do no wrong.
Most of the other actors were quite good too.

4 out of 5 stars Great action film but not really Star Trek   July 5, 2010
Ian Nind (UK)
I completely understand the desire to give Star Trek a shot in the arm. I am not saying that the other films were bad, far from it. I loved most of them, with the possible exception of Star Trek Nemesis and The Final Frontier, which were a little average to say the least. The series definitely needed refreshing a little.

So along comes Star Trek 2009. It certainly is different. It is very fast paced with loads of great action set pieces. It reminded me of Die Hard set in space. The new younger versions of the original crew aren't too bad. Kirk and Spock are good, Chekov and Scotty are a little embarassing to say the least. The new Uhura certainly is tasty but her relationship with Spock ummmm!!!! The special effects and sound are fantastic, especially if you get a chance to see it in High Definition.

For trekkies there are some interesting references to the TV Series and the movies, for example we get to see how Kirk beat the Kobiyashi Maru simulation.

The storyline, which attempts to explain how the original crew all met up and came together is certainly interesting but I just didn't quite believe that this is the way that it would have happened. Also I definitely do not approve of the destruction of Vulcan. Bearing in mind that later episodes and films were partly set on Vulcan, it kind of messes up the continuity.

The main problem for me though is that the thing made Star Trek so great is missing from this movie, or at least it is swamped by the high octane action. There is nothing for the mind in this film, no great theme or thought provoking idea. Star Trek at it's best made you think. I am not saying that it was some great work of pholosophy but it defiitely did make you think. There was plenty of action in the TV Series but it was rarely like this film. It was more considered, slower, more thoughtful. Whilst threr is plenty to admire in this new film, there is just no sense of wonder or magic and that is a shame.

Enjoy this film as a the high quality action movie that it is, but don't expect it to capture the feel and style of the previous films and TV Series.
